Where Is All The ‘Wonder Woman’ Promotion?

by Samantha Mercado

The Wonder Woman movie is almost here! So why haven’t we heard about it? Marketing for Wonder Woman has been astonishingly low in comparison to some of the other DC-Warner Bro films. Wonder Woman hits theaters on June 2, which is almost one month away and yet there are only three trailers on Warner Bros’ Youtube page. Let’s compare that to Marvel’s upcoming Justice League film, which has six videos. The Justice League movie is set to come out in November of 2017 and yet it has twice as many promotional trailers as Wonder Woman. The same hype was placed on Suicide Squad, as a recent UPROXX article stated — you couldn’t turn on a TV or open a browser without seeing some sort of Suicide Squad promo. All the stops were pulled out for Suicide Squad, with TV promos and options to buy tickets in advance and now — when Wonder Woman is at that same point in the marketing cycle there are barely enough trailers to fill a Youtube page.

What makes this even more shocking is the fact that this is about Wonder Woman. She is one of the most iconic female superheroes and just superheroes in general. Even people who don’t follow comics know who Wonder Woman is and she’s been a staple for feminism in the comic and superhero world for over three-quarters of a century. You’d think that with that kind of legacy there would be more hype around her first movie. This whole ordeal is especially disappointing because this is our big shot at having a strong female superhero be the lead and focus of a movie — to be the heroine and the Halloween costume that all the kids want to be. A recent Syfy Wire article put it perfectly- Warner Bros isn’t even trying. Without the promotion of this movie, it’s like giving up before the start.

Whether DC and Warner Bros have fallen into the trap of assuming Wonder Woman is big enough to sell itself or assuming female superhero movies don’t make money and not spending on advertising, our Amazon Princess deserves a bigger shout out. If Warner Bros and DC won’t do it then we’ll do it for them- go out and see Wonder Woman in theaters June 2! Here’s one of the few trailers:
