It is difficult to find independent bookstores in today’s ultra-homogenized corporate land, and many locally owned and run booksellers have suffered significantly.  But the Chicago-based feminist bookstore and publishing house, Women and Children First , have continued to exist, though not without struggle, and will be celebrating 30th anniversary at a Gala on October 3, 2009 with special guests Alison Bechdel and Dorothy Allison.
Women and Children First encourage us to remember the important role feminist bookstores and publishing companies have had on the world as we know it, and continues to urge us to support their efforts as well as the efforts of other independent, feminist bookstores all over the world.
Congratulations, Women and Children First , we’ll be celebrating with you!
