Titanic II To Sail In 2016 With or Without Leo

by Intern Kelsie

I’m contemplating keeping a running tab of superfluous expenditures, compiling them into a rolodex, and calling it my “YOU-HAVE-TOO-MUCH-MONEY” file. I would whip it out when someone told me about their dog’s new cashmere sweater or how they’re planning to visit the Hamster Hotel. Today’s entry? Australian billionaire Clive Palmer, a real estate tycoon from the Gold Coast, has decided to build Titanic II. As if Titanic I didn’t make enough of a splash on its maiden journey (politically incorrect puns for your Monday morning).

Titanic II, set to sail in late 2016, will be a modern-day steamer with all the artistic trappings of the early 20th century. Fake smoke stacks (good for the environment, y’all) and a return to the luxury of its heyday are first on the list. Palmer is keeping mum about just how expensive his pet project will be, but he is apparently worth over $5 billion and has committed himself to making “a tribute to the spirit of the men and women who worked on the original Titanic.”

Now I’m no history expert. I have, however, seen Titanic approximately 75 times in its 2-tape VHS form and also spent the $20 to see Baby Leo and Queen Kate’s faces in 3-D this spring. So, I know my stuff. And the men and women who worked on the original Titanic? They had it rough. While the millionaires in First Class took their sweet time dismounting the ill-fated steamer, those aboard the Titanic as workers and not passengers mostly met tragic ends.

All I can say is, I hope Titanic II has enough lifeboats.
