Tonight is the 34th annual Take Back the Night event, a nighttime vigil and march that takes place worldwide to shatter the silence surrounding sexual and physical violence against women. In the United States, dozens of local Take Back the Nights will begin at 9pm (6pm PST), with ten locations holding special candlelight vigils to illuminate the darkness of abuse, domestic violence, and sexual assault.
Take Back the Night was first practiced in 1976 at the International Tribunal on Crimes Against Women in Brussels, Belgium. 2,000 women took to the streets in protest of sexual violence against women, and now more than 30 years later the movement is stronger than ever with thousands of supporters worldwide.
