Spice Girls: The Musical

by Intern Christina

The spice girls are back again! Well, in spirit. The five women reunited this past week to promote the new musical Viva Forever! that will debut in London’s West End in December. It was the first time that Victoria Beckham, Melanie Brown, Emma Bunton, Melanie Chisholm and Geri Halliwell were all in the same place in four years. Needless to say, the musical has to be a pretty powerful force to bring the queens of girl power back together.

Written by comedian Jennifer Saunders and produced by “Mamma Mia!” producer Judy Craymer, the musical is not a re-telling of the Spice Girls’ rise to world girl domination, but, as the women tell it, “the story of a beautiful, talented girl and her best friends who get swept up in the obsession of today’s TV celebrity culture.” A pretty vague description. How do you think the Spice Girls’ hits will be used? “Wannabe,” “Spice Up Your Life,” and “Viva Forever” are all confirmed numbers.

I’m crossing my fingers that “Stop” and “Never Give Up on  the Good Times” will be featured as well. Since we can’t exactly hop over the pond to see the musical debut in December, all we can do is bump the girl power jams and speculate as to how the numbers will go down in the musical. What do you think it will turn out like?
