Shirley Manson On The Feminist Impact Of L7

by Devon Preston

In the upcoming documentary L7: Pretend We’re Dead (directed by Sarah Price and produced by Blue Hats Creative), feminists rockers like Joan Jett and Brody Dalle discussed the iconic grunge band. One highlight is Shirley Manson of Garbage, explaining in this clip her love for L7.

“I had never seen a band before L7 that was all female fronted, all the members were female, they wrote their own material, and played their own material — I had never really come across that,” says Manson. Manson explains that L7 was an escape from the work of other female artists at the time, stating that L7 didn’t uphold the entertainment industry’s standards for female musicians and instead of being people pleasers in beautiful dresses, L7 “dressed like guys but were hot.” To see more exclusive interviews with Shirley Manson and other famed female performers, stay tuned for the upcoming release of the documentary.

L7 Album

L7: Pretend We’re Dead will premiere at the DOC NYC Festival on November 11th at 9:45pm at the SVA Theater. Not on the East Coast? Don’t fret because on November 20th, L7 will be reuniting to play a show in their hometown of Los Angeles at The Troubador. The jury is still out as to when this film will be released to the masses, although fans have speculated that the documentary will drop before 2016 is up. So keep your fingers crossed that Netflix will pick up the film because this is something that every feminist needs to see.
