Okay, to suggest that Brooklyn band Sharkmuffin has their sights on total world domination may be a stretch. However, their recently released EP, She-Gods of the Champagne Valley, IS the perfect summertime album for girls who dreamed of being Tura Santana when they were little. And whether they’re dedicating a single to Pussy Riot, or playing at feminist art houses (hauses?) guitarist Tarra Thiessen and bassist Natalie Kirch have developed a sound that’s raw and rock while still being tongue-in-cheek playful.
Using wailing vocals over distorted, twangy riffs, the music has hints of a quicker, grittier version of The Pandoras. Or better yet, it sounds as if Karen O melded with Joan Jett, and decided to sing a high-energy rapid-fire cover of Prince’s “Sister.” Not an oddly specific metaphor, that’s actually the fourth track off the album, which is available both on Soundcloud and on cassette (if you want to solidify your hipster cred.)
With an upcoming music video and tour in the works, perhaps they’re a bit busy for world domination…right now. But they are the kind of badass babes you’d crash a rich kid’s pool party with, probably while wearing 4-inch platforms, definitely while swilling a bottle of Jim Beam. In other words: they’re a whole lot of fucking fun.
Start off summertime on the right foot with their next single, “Mermaid Sex Slave.”
