In an interview with The New York Times today, Sarah Paulson, 41, spoke for the first time about her girlfriend, 73-year-old Holland Taylor.
“My choices in romantic partners have not been conventional, and therefore the idea that it is ‘other’ makes it compelling…What I can say absolutely is that I am in love, and that person happens to be Holland Taylor,” Paulson said.
She went on to say, “There’s a poignancy to being with someone older. I think there’s a greater appreciation of time and what you have together and what’s important, and it can make the little things seem very small. It puts a kind of sharp light mixed with a sort of diffused light on something. I can’t say it any other way than there’s a poignancy to it, and a heightened sense of time and the value of time.”
The relationship was all but confirmed earlier in the year when, in an interview with wnyc.com, Holland Taylor confirmed that she was dating a younger woman. In the interview, Holland said, “I haven’t come out because I am out. I live out.”
At 73, this is the first committed relationship with a woman for Holland, while Sarah Paulson had a public relationship with Cherry Jones. Sarah said she does not want to put a label on her sexuality as the future is unknown. “If my life choices had to be predicated based on what was expected of me from a community on either side, that’s going to make me feel really straitjacketed, and I don’t want to feel that,” she said.
The two have been very open and interactive on Twitter and were seen holding hands at the opening night of Fiddler on the Roof.
In the interview with WNYC, Holland said, “It’s the most wonderful extraordinary thing that could have ever possibly happened in my life.” Of marriage, she added, “Given my generation it would not be something that would automatically occur to me. But as a symbol, as a pledge, as a plighting one’s troth, it would be a wonderful thing to do.”
While we may not normally report on celebrities’ private lives, this relationship is an important one. Someone needs to start the movement that older women are sexy, and if Sarah Paulson is the face of the campaign that older women ARE sexy, we are all for it.
