This is a movement which was created to “fight the GOP effort to bully, subjugate and silence women,” and “wrest the power from the word slut and help women get informed, get involved, get registered and vote”.
The word slut was used publicly by Rush Limbaugh earlier this year to describe Sandra Fluke, who testified on behalf of women’s right to contraception at a Congressional hearing. After that he lost many of his advertisers, and inspired a movement to reclaim the word.
This brings us to Rock The Slut Vote. Let me tell you everything you can do on this website.
1. Register to vote, obviously.
2. Send a letter expressing your thanks, or a proverbial ass whooping to your Senator or Representative
3. Look up the website and phone number for your state’s Secretary of State office, where you can get information about elections and find out where to vote.
4. Get directed to ELECTIONLAND, a website that informs you all about “everything related to elections in your state,” and also gives you “access to experts and election officials. In some states you can even ask candidates questions directly”. That’s completely awesome.
5. Find out if you are a slut or not with their extensive poll. You might be one if you have lived with a boyfriend, gone to Planned Parenthood, or downloaded Dixie Chicks music.
6. Buy awesome stuff, like bumper stickers and T-shirts, with phrases such as “Rush Limbaugh Thinks I’m a Slut!” and “Make Love, Not War on Women”.
7. Add your location to the map to show the world that women are standing together.
8. Get a free dog tag.
