Three members of Pussy Riot were convicted of hooliganism, but the movement continues – Feminist Press is making sure of that.
Only a month after three members of feminist punk performance art collective Pussy Riot were sentenced to two years in a penal colony for staging a protest performance in a Moscow cathedral, Feminist Press is releasing an ebook about the trial.
Pussy Riot! A Punk Prayer For Freedom collects previously unavailable Pussy Riot material, including letters from prison, courtroom statements, and poems. It also includes “Punk Prayer,” the song performed in the cathedral; new translations of courtroom statements; and tributes in support of Pussy Riot from artists like Yoko Ono and Karen Finley.
“As the guilty verdict was anticipated, Pussy Riot responded with articulate, unwavering courtroom statements, calling for freedom of expression, an end to economic and gender oppression, and a separation of church and state. They were sentenced to two years in prison, and inspired a global movement. Collected here are the words that roused the world,” reads the press release.
Now, Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev has said that the jailed Pussy Riot members should be freed. According to the BBC, Medvedev has limited influence — President Vladimir Putin holds the real power — so it’s uncertain whether his comments will free Pussy Riot.
