As the Steubenville, Ohio rape trial draws nigh, the Internet has been abuzz with discussion of the two high school football players’ actions and the authorities’ reaction to the case. Protests and rallies have formed due to the city’s negligent conduct. As a result, the police department and city of Steubenville have launched “Steubenville Facts” in an attempt to “disseminate the most accurate information about a recent case involving sexual assault charges pending against two juveniles in Steubenville.” The site claims to keep its audience updated as new information arises but “is not designed to be a forum for how the Juvenile Court ought to rule in this matter.”
In one sense the idea of presenting “facts” in such a cut-and-dry format seems informative and unbiased. Providing mental health and support resources for victims of sexual violence is something I can appreciate. However, one can’t help but think that the time spent on this website could be better used actually investigating the case thoroughly. I also wonder why the website is entitled “Steubenville Facts” when the most recent post from January 10th, 2013, is a link to an opinion piece about not being quick to judge. Le sigh.
