Plus-Size Models On Vogue Italia Cover (NSFW)

by Kristina Uriegas-Reyes

This month, Vogue Italia has created a fabulous cover of curvy ladies for their latest June issue! Models, Tara Lynn, Candice Huffine and Robyn Lawley all look the epitome of gorgeous gracing the cover and lovely Marquita Pring is added to the mix in other shots. The photos are both sexy and elegant. Although there’s sexy lady curves is the shots (remember the Superbowl/Lane Bryant fiasco?), the models still maintain a very high fashion, editorial feel throughout the pictures.

This cover is big, yet conflicting news for me. I’m not sure if it makes me really happy or just want to roll my eyes. It’s a great step by the fashion industry, but the fact that it’s such a big deal is kind of annoying. Someday I’d like to see an integration of plus-size models among normal ones to showcase all body types rather than having a special “Plus-Size Model” issue. Crystal Renn does a pretty good job of blurring the lines between plus-size and average model. That middle ground seems to be the kind of body type that has difficulty finding a place within the industry. There should be more variety and overall healthy looking models. While the cover is a great step, there are definitely more to be had.

I am glad though to see that this is an issue near and dear to the heart of Vogue Italia’s editor-in-chief Franca Sozzani.  She recently told Women’s Wear Daily, “We help [plus-size women] dress fashionably. We help them choose. We don’t talk about diets because they don’t want to be on a diet, but it’s not a ghetto. Why should these women slim down? Many of the women who have a few extra kilos are especially beautiful and also more feminine.” Not only is she passionate about the idea of curvy women in fashion, she’s also passionate about the repercussions of a “skinny minded society.” In March, she launched a petition against pro-anorexia websites!

All I have to say is hopefully this cover is just a taste of what come next…American Vogue..I’m talking to you!
