Planet Fitness Revokes Woman’s Membership for Transphobic Comments

by PRINCESS WEEKES

Planet Fitness Center has revoked the membership of a Michigan woman after she made transphobic comments about another member.

Yvette Cormier’s problem began when she saw a transgender woman walk into the women’s locker room at her local Planet Fitness. Cormier was taken aback because the woman was not dressed in traditional women’s clothes and seemed to be a “man.”

“I wanted to know why there was a man in the women’s locker room,” she told CNN. “He looked like a man, and that’s what stopped me in my tracks.”

She was told that Planet Fitness has a no judgment policy and allows people to go into the changing room of the sex they identify as. Cormier was not satisfied by this answer and took her complaint to corporate.

“That should be something they pointed out when I signed up,” she said.

“If you have male parts you don’t need to be in the women’s locker room. I don’t care what you are; I don’t care if you’re gay lesbian, transgender or transvestite. I am uncomfortable with you as a male in my locker room, in my restroom.”

For the next few days, Cormier returned to the gym to warn other women that Planet Fitness allows “men” into the women’s locker room.

These actions are what led Planet Fitness to revoke her membership. This was the statement released explaining the decision:

“The manner in which this member expressed her concerns about the policy exhibited behavior that management at the Midland club deemed inappropriate and disruptive to other members, which is a violation of the membership agreement and as a result her membership was canceled.”

“Planet Fitness is committed to creating a nonintimidating, welcoming environment for our members. Our gender identity nondiscrimination policy states that members and guests may use all gym facilities based on their sincere self-reported gender identity.”

Bathroom related issues have been a huge part of the legal battle when it comes to the transgender community. Kentucky, Texas, and Florida all have potential laws on the books that could infringe on the rights of transgendered people to use the bathroom of the sex they identify as. While these bills are considered unlikely to pass, it is also a huge problem that people do not understand how being transgendered works and feel it is their place to police them.

Women should be allowed to have their safe spaces, but transwomen are apart of that space and it is not necessary for them to perform to gender expectations in order to be accepted.Planet Fitness Revokes Woman’s Membership for Transphobic Comments
