Patrick Swayze (1952-2009)

I’m sure you all know by now but Patrick Swayze, 57, passed away last night after his 20-month battle with pancreatic cancer. Now, I am beyond bummed about this. Not only was Swayze a talented actor who would do anything for his craft, the way he carried himself after being diagnosed with the disease was commendable and the marking of a truly superb individual.

I remember watching Dirty Dancing at a family gathering when I was a wee one and becoming wide eyed at the grinding that takes place, I learned what ‘ditto’ meant because of Ghost and remember that being the first non-animated movie I cried during, I wanted Dalton’s kick-ass moves in Roadhouse (he rips a guy’s throat out!), bank robbing looked so easy and fun in Point Break and for the first time in his career, I loathed his character of Jim Cunningham in Donnie Darko (‘Is that all the gusta you can musta?’ GRRR!).

‘Nobody puts Baby in a corner’ is going to be heard coming out of countless mouths for days to come but I will always remember Swayze as the actor who never stuck to one genre and kept truckin’ through his illness.

‘If I leave this Earth, I want to leave this Earth just knowing I’ve tried to give something back and tried to do something worthwhile with myself,’ -Swayze in an interview with Barbara Walters in January.
