It’s coming up on the sixteenth anniversary of Princess Diana’s death. A lot has happened since – Charles married Camilla, Will married Kate, and, oh yeah, Prince George was born (as if you hadn’t heard). The beloved princess and humanitarian was only 36 when she died, but her last few years were subject to such intense scrutiny that the media attention she received was blamed for her death.
These last few years, after her divorce from Prince Charles and subsequent romance with Dr. Hasnat Khan, are the subject of an upcoming biopic of Lady Di’s life, directed by Oliver Hirschbiegel.
Naomi Watts brilliantly portrays the princess in this trailer for the film Diana, originally titled Caught in Flight. The choice to cast Watts may seem obvious given her physical resemblance to the princess and her strong performances in cult faves like Mulholland Dr. and I Heart Huckabees – given the cult of celebrity surrounding Lady Di and her death, Watts’ reputation feels only fitting.
(Interestingly, Zero Dark Thirty star Jessica Chastain was first cast as the princess, but had to drop out due to scheduling conflicts.)

Diana is due out September 20th in the U.K. and October 10th in the U.S.
