Miranda Kerr Suggests Traditional Gender Roles for a Healthy Marriage, Insert Eyeroll Here

by Mary Grace Garis

I’m not sure if any of our readers would seriously look to Victoria’s Secret models for marriage advice, or realistic perspective on…anything ever, but Miranda Kerr has caused quite a ruckus when she recently revealed the success of her marriage with Legolas.

Apparently doing big things (writing books, making skin care products, etc.) in a recent interview for Net a Porter’s online magazine, The Edit, Kerr was quoted saying the following:

“I think it is really important not to feel as a woman that you have to do and be everything. I am quite dominant in my career, so what really works for me when I come home is to relax more into my feminine side. If you’re really an alpha female, you don’t allow [your partner] to have the space to feel like the man in the relationship. Maybe I am too traditional, but men feel important when you ask for their help, instead of thinking you can do it all on your own. My mistake in my relationships has been to feel that I can do it all on my own: I don’t need a man. That is definitely a mistake. Women generally want to feel loved and appreciated. It’s something that I am working on every day, trust me! It’s a challenge for me to do that.”

So…sticking to a 1950’s regimen is the way her marriage is thriving.  Cool. I’m also sure that it has nothing to do with the fact that she’s a lingerie model.

Not that a woman’s merit should be judged by her appearance and that I should find her advice less meaningful than that of any other wife.

And it’s good to hear that she’s “dominant in her career,” even though up until recently her career has been basically this:

Just…all I’m saying is, I think it would be more shocking if Kathleen Hanna suggested this as words of wisdom as opposed to an ex-Victoria’s Secret Angel. Therefore it’s more of a SIGH than an UGH on the “reactions to silly quotes” scale. So if it’s worthy of actual critique is debatable, and feel free to let me know if you think there’s any real validity to her statement. She did acknowledge that she was maybe “too traditional.”

Meanwhile, I would like to know what she’s doing to help out her husband’s career. Because so far, the last three times I heard of Orlando Bloom in the last three years was from power watching Pretty Wild on Netflix, looking up Lord of the Rings rifftrax videos on Youtube, and just now.
