Meghan Trainor Smashes Pop Stereotypes With Body Positive Song and Music Video

by Mary Rockcastle

Searching for a summer jam to make you feel AWESOME? Girl, have I got something for you. I’ve been listening to Meghan Trainor’s new single, “All About That Bass,” nonstop for about an hour and my mood has significantly improved.

The best part of Trainor’s single is that it’s all about loving yourself, no matter what you look like. Trainor starts off her retro pop jam singing about how she “ain’t no size two”but how “every inch of you is perfect, from the bottom to the top.” Yeah, I’ll admit, I do have a problem with the part where she refers to “skinny bitches” but in context, the lyric reads:

“I’m bringing booty back

Go ahead and tell them skinny bitches ‘Hey’

No, I’m just playing I know you think you’re fat,

But I’m here to tell you that,

Every inch of you is perfect from the bottom to the top”

The lyric might seem abrasive at first, but really it’s about thin women who think they’re fat, and Trainor encourages them to love themselves regardless.

The best part of this song is the KILLER music video that is not only beautiful to look at aesthetically, but is also chock-full of women and men of color. All of these people are wearing sexy (but not revealing) outfits, which is a breath of fresh air in today’s world of videos like “Blurred Lines” where naked girls are used as decorations.

I know that “All About That Bass” will not only be my go-to summer song, but is totally inspiring my warm weather outfits. Do you have any great summer songs we should all add to our playlists? Tell us in the comments!
