Mary Thom of Ms. Magazine Dies in Motorcycle Accident

by Tess Duncan

It was reported today that beloved co-founder of Ms. magazine passed away after a collision with a car on Friday. The car hit Thom who was riding her Honda Magna motorcycle on Saw Mill River Parkway in Yonkers. We at BUST are mourning a great loss, along with the countless others Thom affected as a writer, editor, and feminist icon. After co-founding Ms. magazine with Gloria Steinem and Letty Cottin Pogrebin, Thom went on to become an editor and later an executive editor at the publication. She wrote a number of fascinating books and was still editor-in-chief of the Women’s Media Center at the time of her death.

Jane Fonda, Gloria Steinem, and Robin Morgan issued a statement expressing their grief regarding the tragic incident: “Ms. Magazine, the Women’s Media Center, the women’s movement and American journalism have suffered an enormous blow. Mary was and will always be our moral compass and steady heart.” Steinem continued, “She had a gift for helping people tell their own story, not for helping them sound like others, but helping them find their own voice.”

We couldn’t have said it better ourselves. We’ll never forget a voice as strong and inspiring as Mary Thom’s.
