Marie Colvin, a legendary reporter and true badass, was killed yesterday by Syrian shelling in rebel stronghold Homs. Colvin was respected by all as one of the most courageous correspondents of her generation. She dedicated her life to disseminating stories from war zones, refusing to water down the information for mass media consumption. In her long career with the Sunday Times of London, Colvin was known to throw herself into the fray of conflicted regions, demanding to tell the story of those most often overlooked: the women and children. “Our mission is to report these horrors of war with accuracy and without prejudice,” she said of the work she did. Her guiding principle was to capture the story by living the lives of the people she was covering. She would eat what they ate, sleep where they slept. Often times she would stay behind after many journalists and peacekeepers left.
Colvin was reporting on location in Syria for the Sunday Times when she and French photographer Remi Ochlik were killed in a shelling of an improvised media office. They are two of five journalists who have died while on assignment in Syria since November. Her final report on the horrors facing besieged Syrian enclave Baba Amr was published Sunday, and in light of her passing, the Sunday Times has taken down the pay wall on her final dispatch. Her dedication to getting information out was unmatched and will be sorely missed.
