“Millions of women find themselves being told to break the glass ceiling,” Maria Shriver explained to Matt Lauer this morning on the Today Show, “and yet they feel that there is no foundation for them to stand on. It’s hard to add another crack to the ceiling when you are standing on a cracked floor.” Let’s face it: women today are forced to be excellent multi-taskers. Instead of just having it all, we’re doing it all as well—working full time, raising children, caring for sick relatives, volunteering in the community, and trying to make ends meet when the paycheck doesn’t quite cut it.

“[This campaign] will focus on the struggles women face,” Shriver writes on the Today show website, “as they navigate their modern roles in an ever changing world.” I commend Shriver for not only acknowledging that it is hard to attain success when you’re missing key elements for a solid foundation, but also for attempting to bring attention to this dilemma. I hope that this campaign will bring awareness to the gender wage gap, lack of affordable mental health and child care, and other important issues. These issues can’t be fixed in a single Today Show segment, but publicly having the conversation is the first step.
