Writer Amanda Hess recently sat down with Mike Pesca of The Gist to discuss the influx of males that are now labeling themselves as advocates for gender equality (#Heforshe), Aziz Ansari and why everything in the world is just so damn complicated.
Ansari’s recent declaration of feminism on The Late Show with Dave Letterman was a prominent talking point during the podcast. If you missed it, in-between typical talk-show anecdotes and Beyoncé references, Ansari defined a feminist as, “someone who believes men and women have equal rights.”
Seems simple enough, amirite?
Nope! Hess and Pesca continued to explore the complexities that can arise from men now labeling themselves as feminists. Are we meant to applaud them? Are they taking up our space? For every time a male spews off the dictionary definition of what a feminist is, should we be like, “…Yea? …And? TELL US SOMETHING WE DON’T KNOW!”?
Welcome to the feminist club, dudes. There’s more to it than declaring equal rights; it’s about recognizing feminist topics that the mainstream media ignores, like promoting the visibility of trans women and men, securing that girls all around the world are allowed to be educated, and ensuring that all women’s voices are equally heard at our feminist party, among other things. So gentlemen, talk with us, not just for us, and we can all benefit! Let’s keep spreading the message of feminism and equality!
What do we think, BUSTies?
