British Witch Invents Magical Color Changing Hair Dye

by Rachel Withers

Finally, science has done something useful for us wannabe witches.

Scientist, entrepreneur and self-professed occultist Lauren Bowker and her company The Unseen have developed the world’s first color changing hair dye, FIRE

Like a mood ring for your hair, this new hair dye uses a scientifically modified version of thermochromic ink (the one found in Global Hypercolor t-shirts in the 80’s and 90’s) to make the hair’s color change with fluctuating temperatures. I mean moods. We all know mood rings are magically controlled by our moods. With the case of FIRE this is even more of the case: Forbes reports that the color even changes with your body temperature when you blush. Magic is real.

Bowker grew up interested in witchcraft, telling Dazed, “Even as a kid I used to mix bath potions, and was really hands-on with the stuff I had around me, making new products out of them, without even knowing I was doing it.” She also knows a thing or two about chemistry. She’s combined these loves to create the dyes, which range in color from bright red to subtle pastels.

“Inspired by occult glamor – a spell cast on somebody to make them see something the spell-caster wishes them to see,” says The Unseen’s website. The number one thing of all the magic in the Harry Potter universe I ever wanted was the ability to be a Metamorphmagus, like Nymphadora Tonks. This just got one step closer to reality.

Bowker told Forbes that she took inspiration from another set of witches, specifically that hair-color-changing scene from The Craft:

You can spend your day watching videos of the enthralling color changing process on their Instagram or website.

Sadly, you can’t get your hands on FIRE just yet. The Unseen is launching the product at London Fashion Week in partnership with Storm Models, but they are still looking for a major hair care brand with whom to partner to take the product to the market, hopefully by the end of 2017.

In the meantime, keep an eye on their Insta; Bowker tells Forbes they are planning to release unpolished Instagram Live videos in order to prove just how real the magic really is.
