I was lucky enough to catch the sold-out Little Boots show this past Tuesday night (in my business clothes, no less) , and lemme tell ya, good night, nurse! I strolled into the Music Hall of Williamsburg just as first opening band, Feathers, took the stage. All hail Feathers! They played the hell out of the best songs on their debut album, If All Now Here, filling the hall with their ominous, dance-y sound. I didn’t want it to end, and my only complaint about their set is that it was too short.
Second on deck was Avan Lava, who burst onto stage wearing white and blasting confetti guns. I liked them instantly. They swept the horde off its feet with their hot, upbeat, expertly-sung jams, just before the two frontwomen dove headfirst into a sea of people for some old-fashioned crowd surfing. Also, I’m pretty sure the group humped every piece of equipment onstage, including each other and some people on the floor. They really tore it up.
Next was the full enchilada and one of your main reasons to live, Little Boots (aka Victoria Hesketh). Cute as a frickin’ button, she wore a long, flowy, ’70s-ish gown–something I could see Frida or Agnetha of ABBA flaunting–and proceeded to conduct a serious electro-disco dance party right there in the middle of Brooklyn. With a voice like an angel, she sung new tunes from her recently released second album, Nocturnes, including my faves “Confusion” and “Motorway,” and some oldies like “New in Town” and “Earthquake.” Then she would hunker down over her sound station and stick it to every ear in attendance. I can’t imagine a soul in there standing unmoved during the show.
Hesketh turned out a colossal four-song encore, including fan favorites “Remedy” and “Shake,” putting the finishing touch on an altogether tight and flawless concert. I left the show a whimpering, jelly-legged fool with my sleeves rolled up and skirt twisted backwards, but I’m a better person for it. I can’t remember the last time I saw such an excellent concert.
