Karmin: “The Little Band with a Big Sound”

by Ariana Anderson

I’m usually not a fan of covers (just listen to the originals people!), but Karmin has won a special place in my heart.

By covering everyone’s favorite Top 40 rap, pop, rock, and R&B songs, editing out curse words, and highlighting the songs’ musicality, Karmin has been getting a lot of attention from the ol’ interwebz lately. The musical pair don’t take themselves too seriously, and they are able to simultaneously honor and poke fun at the songs they’re covering. They keep it pared down, often just using a guitar and a box to accompany Amy’s incredible voice as seen here:

They have already covered an impressive 23 songs, as well as nine of their own tracks, all of which you can check out here. The duo released a 4-track EP last May, Inside Out, and are currently recording a full-length album with more original music, proving that this group may become more than just an internet sensation. Recently they met Busta Rhymes at the BET Awards, and he even suggested they do a collaborative song on his album!

Their website describes them as a “little band with a big sound.” And it’s true, the classically trained pair has real musical talent. Nick and Amy met at Berklee College of Music in Boston where they started dating and began to create music together. (The couple is now engaged.) Nick juggles a myriad of instruments, and the very adorable Amy almost exclusively does the vocals. Her impressive raps are really the reason the group became famous, and she is widely known as “that one white girl that can rap.”

My favorite cover is Chris Brown’s Look at Me Now, on which Amy shows off her incredible skills by spitting out lyrics faster than your brain can comprehend them:
