For something that is so often talked about, “virginity” is one of those things that doesn’t have one solid definition. I mean, think about it. What is virginity? If a virgin is someone who doesn’t have sex, then what counts as sex? If sex is vagina-penis penetration than are all homosexuals virgins? How does this (so called) “biological” state that has no medical definition become so interwoven with a woman’s morality and character?
Therese Shechter asks these and many other questions in her documentary How To Lose Your Virginity which will premiere for the first time in US television this February 8 on Fusion!
The film follows Shechter as she covers all facets of virginity from purity balls to porn, all in hopes of exposing the myths and misogyny surrounding a rite of passage that many obsess about but few (if any) truly understand. Along the way, viewers are introduced to sex educators, virginity auctioneers, abstinence advocates, and young men and women who bare their tales of doing it… or not doing it.
