Google Donation Helps Black Girls Code

by Rebecca Peterson

With women making up only 17 percent of Google’s global tech workforce, and with white and asian employees making up 94 percent of Google’s US tech force, it’s encouraging to see practical efforts to bring black and latina girls into the tech world.

Black Girls Code is an awesome organization that received a $190,000 donation from Google on Saturday to continue such efforts, according to the New York Daily News. The organization provides coding workshops to minority girls, to build their interest and skills in the computer world.

As founder Kimberly Bryant says on their website, “That, really, is the Black Girls Code mission: to introduce programming and technology to a new generation of coders, coders who will become builders of technological innovation and of their own futures.”

Their next event is the Women of Color in STEM Career Panel For Girls, to be held on Oct. 11 at the YMCA of Brooklyn.
