Francis Fox Piven, a distinguished professor of political science and sociology at The Graduate Center at CUNY since 1982, has been receiving death threats after Glenn Beck named her one of the nine most dangerous people in the world. Piven, aged 78, has taught generations of students on the politics of the poor. She has authored books on poor people’s movements and voting. Beck has stated that she is an enemy of the Constitution, and her plans would “intentionally collapse our economic system”. In an interview with The Progressive, she says, “I got emails that said, ‘Die You Cunt’ and ‘May cancer find you soon’. And people are posting my address on the Internet with their messages that are really crude and ugly and violent.” The Center of Constitutional Rights has had to step in, trying to get Glenn Beck to quell the death threats, which he has not. Piven is a far cry from being one of the most dangerous people in the world. Is it just more dangerous when a woman is overtly political? Is a smart woman just too much for bigot, Glenn Beck to handle? Pat yourselves on the back, brainy women, you may just be one of the most dangerous people in the world! If only it were true.
