Foodies Unite!

by Nissa

Tonight debuts the fourth annual New York City Food Film Festival. The NYC Food Film Fest is the delicious brainchild of documentary filmmaker George Motz, director of the documentary Hamburger America. Motz wanted us to be able to explore a multi-dimensional method of tasting food – by learning about it at the same time! So what exactly is this food and film fest? The best answer is that its an exploration of an overall sensory experience of food. You watch a documentary about food, while you eat it. Many of the proceeds go to the Food Bank, who reminds you that “no New Yorker should be without food.”

And some of it is free (though you should make a donation) so it can’t get any better.

There are also some venues which take a themed approach to food and charge a flat rate for the experience. This starts off with an oyster “shuck and suck” tribute to oysters and ends with “The Kee to Chocolate” – a film about a woman who leaves “the financial world to pursue her passion for fine chocolate.”

The Film Food Fest showcases local restaurants while expanding your culinary horizons – think “squid chips,” “pig’s ears sandwiches, ” and “ginger balls”.

While many of the festivities are free, some take the challenge a little further and charge a flat rate for more food and, of course, wine, beer and cocktails. You need a ticket to get in regardless of price so  Click here to see a full explanation of all events.

Last year’s reviews boasts of warm bacon chocolate chip cookies and burgers topped with pats of butter.

The festival is sort of spread out over the city depending upon which event you want to go to. You can find a whole schedule of events here

Many of this years events are selling out (you need a ticket even if a certain event is free) so check out the website.
