Drag Race Alumni Come Out In Support of Hillary and All We Can Say Is “Yas Queens!”

by Devon Preston

If I had to count my biggest priorities in life, keeping up with RuPaul’s Drag Race would be high on that list. I honestly can’t remember how I stumbled upon this show, but as many of you may know, this program is extremely addictive. From the over-the-top couture to the theatrical challenges — and let’s not forget about the lip syncs that take our breath away — there’s no denying that RuPaul’s Drag Race is top shelf entertainment.

But this show is more than just sassy and fabulous queens, it’s also become a political platform for members of the LGBT community to discuss relevant issues. Since its premiere in February 2009, RuPaul and his army of drag racers have publicized causes such as LGBT censorship, gay marriage, and trans equality — making these topics accessible to a global audience. Just this past week, some of the former contestants of the show decided that it was their time to spill the tea on this election and make it known that they support Hillary Clinton.

In the video (created by World of Wonder), Drag Race stars Tempest DuJour, Alaska Thunderfuck, Naysha Lopez, Ginger Minj, Mariah Balenciaga, and Jaidynn Dior Fierce take lip synching for your life to the next level — by creating dragged-out performances of Donald Trump and miming along to some of his most notorious speeches. While the queens are still largely recognizable and flamboyant, with painted faces and sequin-clad ensembles, they were able to capture Trump’s essence with bad wigs and ill-fitting blazers alone. Landon Cider, on the other hand, a prominent drag king, also stars alongside the queens, and they used special effects makeup and costuming to create a “realistic” caricature of the Republican nominee. Trust me, the image of Cider as Trump is freakily accurate and reminds me of something you’d find at Spirit of Halloween.

But Trump wasn’t the only political figure that played a part in this skit. We got to see Alyssa Edwards give us her best Hillary Clinton. I honestly can’t think of a queen who would do a better Hillary Clinton than Edwards. The former pageant contestant has all the poise and composure of HRC, but she still gives us some classic Alyssa Edwards quirkiness. Now, if only Hillary could throw a tongue pop into the next debate.

The end of the video stars Allstars winner and seasoned celebrity impersonator, Chad Michaels, reprising his role as the legendary Cher. The Goddess of Pop has always been forthright about her views on Donald Trump, publicly expressing her concern for his potential candidacy and what effect it could have on the nation at large. Chad Michaels uses Cher as a means of expressing his disapproval of the shenanigans performed by Trump and support of Hillary for President.

The queens are using their online presence and growing fan base to encourage people to register to vote and support a candidate that stands up for LGBT rights. Over the past several years, the queer community has made INCREDIBLE strides toward equality and we cannot let someone like Trump or Pence threaten to take that away. This skit may be humorous and satirical but the message is real and affects millions of Americans. Please listen to these fierce queens and register to vote so that we can keep hatred out of the oval office.
