Alexa Chung to Star in Thrifty PBS Reality Show

by Mary S

For several years, my BFF and I have vaguely planned to make a road-trip reality TV show, where we travel around in an RV and find deals at various thrift stores, antique malls, and shuttered local department stores filled with dead stock. Of course, we never really got that off the ground, and now the inevitable has happened: Alexa Chung stole our idea. According to the New York Times, “On Thrift America, scheduled to be broadcast on PBS next summer … Chung will comb the country’s consignment shops, garage sales and flea markets for old clothing and other potential treasures to use in creative endeavors.”

Alexa Chung has proven she knows how to mix vintage with designer, but I can’t help but wonder: just what kind of thrifter is she? Will they show the process, or just the finds? Can she locate the one vintage dress in a sea of poly NY&CO blouses in a football field- sized Savers? Sure, she’s friends with Karl Lagerfeld, but will she comb the children’s section for old t-shirts? And what about records, tchochkes, bric-a-brac, and half-off tags? I guess we’ll just have to wait and see.
