Lieutenant Colonel Jeffrey Krusinski is the chief of the Air Force’s sexual assault prevention and response branch. Ironically enough, Krusinski was arrested this past weekend in Arlington, Virginia for assaulting a woman. According to local police reports, he fondled the woman’s breasts and buttocks in a parking lot.
Pentagon spokesman George Little has stated that Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel “expressed outrage and disgust over the troubling allegations” and “emphasized that this matter will be dealt with swiftly and decisively.” Great. We’re all so comforted by your vague, emphatic promises. It’s almost like the victim wasn’t even sexually violated at all! Except that she totally was and it’s just hard to believe anyone’s doing anything about it when you consider the military’s pile of dirty laundry that’s yet to be dealt with.
Let’s start with Lieutenant Colonel James Wilkerson. Last year, the fighter pilot and former inspector general was sentenced to a year in jail and dismissed from the Air Force after his conviction of aggravated sexual assault. Lieutenant General Craig Franklin apparently wasn’t pleased with Wilkerson’s punishment, so he overturned the sentence and reinstated Wilkerson.
Then there are the training instructors at Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland, the Air Force’s basic training grounds. Over twelve instructors have been convicted of misconduct with their trainees, including cases of fraternization and sexual assault. These cases are still under investigation.
General Mark Welsh III, the Air Force’s Chief of Staff, stated that sexual assault “just has the potential to rip the fabric of your force apart. I think it is doing that to a certain extent now.” Maybe Welsh should pass along this video to his staff. It’s safe to say that these kinds of disgusting crimes are exactly what Jackson Katz had in mind during his inspiring speech.
