Afro-Punk Festival August 27-28

by Ariana Anderson

The 7th annual Afro-punk Festival returns to Commodore Barry Park in Brooklyn, NY and the line-up is probably the most spectacular yet. Incredible artists such as Santigold, Janelle Monae, Cee-Lo Green, JoiRocky Business, Toro Y Moi, and many others will take the stage August 27th and 28th. There’s music for almost any taste because, like the 2010 promo video states, “Afro-punk is not a genre—it’s a state of mind.”

But this isn’t just a music festival. Once again all you amateur skaters and riders can enter the Nike Battle for the Streets Skate and BMX Competition, which is judged by professionals in both sports, such as Nigel Sylvester. This year they’re also introducing the Bites and Beats Food Festival, featuring over 20 vendors of cuisine from all over the world, and the Harley Davidson/Black Chrome Custom Bike Show, featuring custom bikes created by local NYC riders. And, what I find most interesting, over 300 professionally and uniquely painted to create an enormous mural, The Skate Artwall. The boards will then be contested to festival attendees, and, according to their press release, “Afro-punk will follow the life of the boards over the next year whether on the wall, the street, or the half-pipe.” How cool is that?!
