70s Funk Singer Betty Davis Is Getting Her Own Movie – And You Can Help

by Dawn Day

Huge news for Betty Davis fans: A biopic telling the story about the legendary original Nasty Gal is in the works, and there is a bunch of cool merch you can nab to help make this movie happen! Nasty Gal: The Many Lives of Funk Queen Betty Davis will begin production this fall, and to secure music and archive licenses and cover principal photography, Native Voice Films has launched a site on Indiegogo, a global fundraising site. The site allows fans that want to see inside the life of the ‘70s diva to contribute to the production of the project through donations, or by purchasing “perks” ranging from a $10 shout out in the movie credits all the way to a $1,000 invitation to the world premiere of the film.

Betty Davis’ status as a cult icon of the ‘70s with her raunchy lyrics, short marriage to Miles Davis and alleged affair with Jimi Hendrix has more to it than meets the eye. The film promises to dive into the untold story of both Betty’s childhood and her mysterious post-career life where she entered into 35 years of solitude.

Betty released a press statement saying, “Although I’ve been silent for a long time I feel it’s important to help shape my legacy while I’m alive by returning my story and music to people who will value it and learn from it. I am excited to be a part of this project and hope it finds the support it needs.”

Take a peek at the teaser for the film and get pumped for its eventual release. To get a healthy dose of Betty in the meantime we’ll be listening to the Nasty Gal album on repeat—you should too.
