NBC’s Community is finally returning to its original time slot on NBC tonight. Even better, the newest episode, “Urban Matrimony and the Sandwich Arts” will feature another guest appearance by Malcom-Jamal Warner as Shirley’s estranged husband.

Aside from being a smart, well-acted, complex sitcom that makes me spit-take during every episode, Community’s cast and creator have been vocal about having a writing staff full of women. About half of the episodes of the second season were credited to female staff writers, including my personal favorites, “Cooperative Calligraphy” (written by Hilary Winston) and “For a Few Paintballs More” (written by Megan Ganz). Ganz and the female stars discussed the benefit of having so many female writers on staff in a February interview with The Daily Beast. Ganz noted:

“It’s not like women work on the women types of storylines. We don’t just come in every day and say, ‘I think Troy and Britta should kiss.’ Everybody works on every storyline. It’s the same reason that it’s good to have women in the room, and the same reason it’s good to have men and ethnicities represented and older people and younger people. If you find a story that everybody likes and everybody relates to in some way, then you know you have a good story.”

Even though the show has been on a hiatus since December, the cast members and writers have continued to give interviews and make appearances over the last several months. Now is the time to get your Greendale study group together and hit the books (err, blogs). Here are a couple places to start:

  • This recent panel interview with most of the cast and creator Dan Harmon. If you don’t have time to watch the whole thing (which is over an hour), at least check out the first five minutes, which sees most of the cast mime a striptease as they enter the stage.
  • A new interview with actor Jim Rash, a.k.a. Dean Pelton, who just won an Oscar for the screenplay of The Descendants.

Stay streets ahead by tuning in to NBC tonight at 8:00pm!
