Beyoncé Brings Feminism To The Masses

Beyoncé gave a major shoutout to our favorite dirty word, flashing “FEMINIST” in lights behind her during last night’s Video Music Awards performance. Text filled the screen for the sampling of novelist Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie’s TEDx Talk on embracing feminism, leaving no ambiguity that one of America’s biggest pop stars is indeed a gender right’s icon.

While much can be said about whether Beyoncé conforms to a cohesive and comprehensive feminist identity, having a major celebrity stand by feminism in such a public context is a landmark in and of itself. Beyoncé celebrated feminism last night in front of thousands of young women who may not have otherwise been exposed to it, and we think that’s pretty cool. What do you think?
