These Photos Show Motherhood Like You’ve Never Seen It

by Morgan Gartner

Anna Ogier-Bloomer’s photography shows us the realities of motherhood and breastfeeding—and it’s intimate, sometimes exhausting and undeniably beautiful.

22Scratches From Breastfeeding

Breastfeeding has become an extremely wide-spread and hotly debated topic. Everyone, men and women (though mostly men), seems to have something to say about whether or not a woman should breastfeed in public. This discussion generally tends to focus more on the breast and less on the woman. Anna Ogier-Bloomer reminds us that attached to that breast is a whole, multifaceted, woman. She explores aspects of both breastfeeding and motherhood through her photo series Letdown and Family Pictures, which feature herself, her mother and her daughter.

Anna Ogier-Bloomer has an MFA in Photography and Related Media, which she received from the Parsons School of Design. She has exhibited at galleries and museums including the Bridge Art Fair in Miami/Basel, The Contemporary Art Center in Cincinnati, The Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, and at the Attleboro Arts Museum in Massachusetts. Her photography is personal and intriguing but remains approachable. It shows us a side of motherhood and breastfeeding that is both striking and breathtakingly real. You can see more of her work on her website and Instagram.
