The classic '80s comedy Tootsie is a riot and if you haven't already seen it, you kind of need to, like yesterday. (If you never saw it, I'll break it down for you: Dustin Hoffman is a really great New York actor, but he can't get hired because he's difficult to work with, so he cross-dresses and adopts a new, sassy persona so he can get hired again. Tah-dah, a woman saves the day once again!) In this interview from the American Film Institute's archives, Hoffman discusses why he felt he really had to play the role of dynamic feminist Dorothy Michaels. Read More
In 2011, four ladies from Western Massachusetts formed the garage-rock band that is Potty Mouth. They released super lo-fi demo Bad Bad in September of that year, followed by the slightly louder, post-rock-influenced EP Sun Damage in 2012. Lead singer Abby's monotone (but never dull) vocals perfectly complement the melodic chord progressions and '70s punk riffs. Their pop-punk tendencies shine through but combine with '90s grunge to make songs about just being young and having a good time. Read More
Here's another thought-provoking, complex series of photos that challenge gender roles in relationships. Remember that kickass "Made Up" project where couples switched makeup routines? Well, this photographer took that idea to another level. Spanish artist Jon Uriarte wanted to do the shoot after talking with some dude friends about how different relationships between men and women today are from the way they were during his parents' generation. OMG, this video. OMG, I love it. But really, though. Oh My Goodness is a Maine-born experimental hip-hop duo now based in Brooklyn and they've just released their latest video for "OMG OMG." It seems pretty simple: black and white film, just the two of them (Therese Workman and Tyler Wood) performing, nothing too fancy. Then the images get all warped and mirror-y and shit gets realer. The same idea can be applied to the song. It starts off with a catchy enough chorus and melody, which will most definitely be in your head for the rest of your day. (You're welcome. Read More
You might remember artist Nickolay Lamm for his work removing doll's makeup to show that they looked just as lovely without that extra layer. Now, as promised, he's created a "normal"-sized Barbie, made to show us more realistic proportions of American women. He transferred CDC (Center for Disease Control & Prevention) measurements of an average 19-year-old woman to make the 3-D model, then used photoshop to liken the doll to a Barbie. "If we criticize skinny models, we should at least be open to the possibility that Barbie may negatively influence young girls as well," says Lamm. Read More
These days it's pretty simple. Pee on this little stick and in a few brief moments you'll know if you've been knocked up. But before the advent of EPTs (or early-pregnancy tests), what did we ladies do to make sure we weren't just having delayed periods or something? Some weird shit, I tell you. In Ancient Egypt, women would piss on planted wheat and barley seeds, and when neither sprouted that meant you weren't pregnant. BUT if the wheat seeds sprouted, that allegedly meant you were expecting a girl and if the barley started growing you were having a boy. Except not really. Read More
Venus the cat has a condition: total badassery. As you can see, she's got two different eye colors (AKA heterochromia) and a giant, perfectly straight splash of black that runs down half of her face. She pretty much looks like Two Face but I guess scientists have a name for this, too. They're speculating that this may make Venus a chimera. This means that, under rare circumstances, two genetically different embryos merged in the womb. This is basically the opposite of identical twins, where the fertilized egg would separate to form two different embryos. Read More
You Me & Us have a knack for making classic pop songs with a refreshingly rough edge. The Palm Springs, CA trio put a lo-fi spin on their signature noise-pop stylings to create their latest EP Stay Inside. Listening to the sweetly-sung, Jenny Lewis-esque vocals, distorted guitars, and reverb-filled melodies reminds me of a summer day spent lounging around because it's too hot outside and you'd rather just fuck around, listening to records. If Arizona wasn't already getting you all riled up, now Texas is making things even more infuriating. Sunday night, hundreds of protesters crowded into the Texas capitol in an effort to stop the passage of Senate Bill 5. SB5 essentially piled all of the bills that didn't pass during Texas' normal session into one huge anti-abortion agenda. The bill is a whole bundle of abortion restrictions that will result in the closure of almost all of Texas' abortion clinics, leaving about 5 remaining in the entire, big-ass state. Read More
For twelve years, researchers in India have been studying the effect and validity of screening for cervical cancer using vinegar. Now it's been determined that the test is, in fact, useful and a great alternative for those who lack access to regular Pap smears. On Sunday, Surendra Srinivas Shastri at Tata Memorial Centre in Mumbai presented these exciting results at the American Society of Clinical Oncology in Chicago. Read More
