For weeks following the announcement that Jon Stewart would be leaving The Daily Show, people speculated about who would be the next host. Here at BUST, we were anxious to see a woman’s name in the mix, and on Friday, we learned that our prayers came close to being answered. Comedian Amy Schumer recently revealed that Comedy Central approached her for the gig. However, much to our disappointment, she turned down the offer. Schumer noted that the five-year contract is what ultimately caused her to pass up the coveted position of The Daily Show host. Read More
Anyone who knows me is aware that both Gloria Steinem and public libraries are two of my absolute favorite thing/people on the planet, so it was awesome to hear that she spoke at the American Library Association's Annual Conference this weekend. Steinem wasn’t only there because she’s an acclaimed author (with a new book coming out soon!)— She also loves libraries and librarians. “I think your profession is the greatest profession on earth," she said in her speech, according to Publishers Weekly. Last week we wrote about John Oliver’s coverage of the harassment women face online, which we thought was pretty great, but this week’s segment on transgender rights was amazing on a whole new level. Now, it’s a legitimate criticism that we shouldn’t be patting mainstream media white guys on the back for bringing attention to important issues of marginalized groups. However, Oliver is using his substantial platform to provide truly empathetic education about transgender rights. He is doing the requisite work for being an ally. Read More
Like any talented photographer, the late Mary Ellen Mark’s photos leave us wanting to know more about her unexpected subjects. Luckily, NPR’s Chris Benderev tracked down the child who was featured in one of Mark’s most memorable shots entitled, “Amanda and her Cousin Amy,” and here’s what we learned: The nine-year-old girl seen smoking a cigarette in the photo (shown above) is now known as Amanda Marie Ellison. She is 34 years old, lives in Lenoir, NC, and she says of the photo shoot, “Never forgotten it. Never in my life have I forgotten it. Read More
It’s a victory for women everywhere that female genital mutilation has been outlawed in Nigeria. FGM is defined by the World Heath Organization as “procedures that intentionally alter or cause injury to the female genital organs for non-medical reasons.” It is a cultural practice in some regions, primarily within regions of countries in the Middle East and Africa, and it doesn’t have any health benefits. More than 100 million girls have experienced FGM, which often happens below the age of 15. Read More
As three more victims of the South Carolina church massacre were being laid to rest this Saturday, Bree Newsome, a 30-year-old Charlotte-based activist, took a stand. Newsome climbed the 30-foot flagpole in front of South Carolina's State House to remove the Confederate flag. As the Capitol police ordered her down, Newsome continued her act of civil disobedience and took down this symbol of oppression. She paused in her descent to declare, “I come to get you in the name of God. Read More
Meryl Streep keeps it real. Her speeches are decidedly impeccable, her talent leaves me consistently awed , and she’s also…*drumroll* a feminist. Her recent work includes mailing letters to all 535 members of Congress to garner support for the Equal Rights Amendment. The proposed amendment to correct that, originally passed by Congress in 1972, missed full ratification by just three states. Read More
From vampires to aliens, ladies have been crushin’ on not-quite-human men for years. But now they’ve taken it one step further with Shabani the gorilla. Yes, unlike Angel from Buffy, he exists in real life, but he is also a primate.  After pics of him began circulating on Twitter, ladies have been flocking to Higashiyama Zoo in Japan to see the strangely attractive gorilla in person. “It's a perfect example of the Internet society,” Takayushi Ishikawa, a zoo spokesperson, told CNN. “We were very surprised by the phenomenon. Meninism is not defined in the dictionary because meninism is not a valid term or movement. The two men who run the Meninism Tweet Twitter account say meninism is “(parody) obviously sarcasm.” Meninism is not advocating for men’s rights. It is not fighting any of the issues men face. Meninism is simply a mockery of feminism and all that it stands for.  “#Meninism” and “#Meninist” have exploded on Twitter. The account and accompanying hashtags have more than 900 thousand followers, some of whom own shirts bearing the #Meninist logo. Read More
