Atlanta’s feminist bookstore, Charis Books & More, was vandalized with anti-gay slurs and vulgar imagery the night of Thursday, October 3rd. The store – which will turn 39 in November and is one of the few remaining feminist bookstores in the nation – was tarnished with slurs like “Eat mor dick”, and was graffiti’d with pictures of penises, after holding the literary event, “Stride into Pride: Atlanta Literary All Star Showcase". The special event was a part of Atlanta’s Gay Pride Week. Read More
Trigger Warning: This post contains the description of sexual assault and may be triggering to survivors. I’ve been hearing a lot of talk about comparing Miley Cyrus’ sexual antics to Madonna’s thought-provoking ways of the 1980s. Read More
Last month, we reported on Diana Nyad’s incredible 110-mile swim from Cuba to Florida. Now Nyad is doing something even cooler: she’s swimming for Superstorm Sandy relief. Diana certainly doesn't cease to amaze us! As a part of “Nyad: Swim for Relief,” Nyad will be in New York City, swimming a total of 48 continuous hours in order to raise funds for the AmeriCares Hurricane Sandy Relief Fund. Her cause certainly doesn't come as a surprise: Last year's Superstorm hit close to home for the long distance swimmer. Nyad told CBSNews. Read More
Get ready to let the awwww’s flow because this tiny human is truly adorable! Last Friday, October 4th, dance teacher Tianne King and her daughter Heaven (such an appropriate name!) showcased their dance moves on The Ellen Show. The two became internet-famous back in May of this year when Tianne uploaded to YouTube a video of the duo dancing to Beyoncé’s “End of Time.” Here’s the original video of the two: At the time of the video, Heaven was only two. Now at the ripe age of three, this little girl is making TV spots. Read More
If you’re a fan Breaking Bad, dry your finale tears 'cause you’re in for a treat! Recently, Do or Dine owner/chef Justin Warner and New York Post reporter Kate Briquelet spotted Breaking Bad yarn bombs in the Bedford-Stuyvesant area of Brooklyn, NY. On the entrance of the G train at Bedford and Nostrand stands a simple crocheted “BrBa,” the show’s infamous symbol, and on the corner of Dekalb Ave and Spencer Ct is a fence that holds a knitted sign that reads “I <3 JESSE PINKMAN” with a woman’s silhouette. That is the big question that New York City is raising through a new campaign called the NYC Girls Project, which aims to help promote self-esteem in tweens. In the newest “public education campaign geared towards girls ages 7-12,” new ads will appear on buses, subways, and phone kiosks. Read More
The Affordable Care Act, aka Obamacare, has always confused me, even though I am currently insured under my mother, and I plan to stay that way until I turn 26 (lol hi Mom!). But now with Obamacare fully in place as of today (although the government is currently kaput), we should all take a second to read up and realize what the ACA has done for women in simpler terms.  First off, you can get quality healthcare insurance now that the Health Insurance Marketplace is open! As it says on Healthcare. Read More
It’s no surprise when I tell you MC Lyte is one of the flyest female rappers in hip-hop. If that comes to you as a surprise, then you don’t know real hip-hop (#notsorry). Growing up in my household, MC Lyte was one of the many rappers that my older sister and brother used to blast and I thank them for introducing me to her at such a young age. I mean, have you even heard “Cappucino”? Lyte always pointed out misogyny in the hip-hop community and New York City violence in her lyrics. Read More
Ok, not gonna lie, but when I first heard that Lizzy Caplan was going to be in a show about sex, I squealed. I mean, her sex scenes in season one of True Blood made me utterly jealous, mainly because she was up close and personal with Ryan Kwanten. But a recent Vulture interview with Caplan helped me understand her new show, Masters of Sex, a bit further. Masters of Sex, which premiered last night on Showtime at 10PM EST, centers on the highly revolutionizing sex research conducted by William Masters (played by Michael Sheen) and his research partner Virignia Johnson (Caplan).
