Angel Olsen is a Chicago-based singer songwriter, and her 2012 album Half Way Home got a LOT of play in my apartment last year. Check her out on Spotify if you enjoy Patsy Cline, Bonnie "Prince" Billy (she’s toured with him), or beautiful folk songs about restless wandering and dudes who don’t call. If you get the chance to see her live, do—she played Pitchfork Music Festival last summer and managed to turn day-drunk festival goers into a mostly ... Read More
How's your Halloween going? Have you carved all of the pumpkins? Have you worn your "Sexy Chucky from Child's Play" costume once already so it's kind of tattered but it'll still look so great in a dimly-lit room full of tipsy people? Are your apples bobbed and your candies corned? Cool, me too!
Listen to this mix as you prep for our national day of cosplay and lighthearted faux paganism—they're the sort of moody-spooky-sexy jams that the Lost Boys ... Read More

HOW many times have you said to yourself, “I love watching Golden Girls reruns, but I wish I could take it one step further—if only I had a safe space where I could dream up my own Dorothy Zbornak zingers and Blanche Devereaux double entendres, and maybe lay a tiny plastic cheesecake on the kitchen island?” Well, get ready, because your dreams are about to come true for the extremely reasonable price of $175. Thanks, Etsy!

Snuggle up with your boyfriend/girlfriend/”let’s not even put labels on it”-type person and listen to this Spotify mix of romantical indie covers, featuring Bat for Lashes, Florence and the Machine, and She & Him. Alternately, you can listen while standing in the corner and moving your own arms up and down your back so it looks like you’re making out with an invisible. Funny in 8th grade, still hilarious now!*

These rap and R&B votive candles from Chicago-based artist Meaghan Garvey are my current Etsy obsession. Paying tribute to a variety of artists both dead and alive, they make for conversation-starting decorations that both celebrate and poke fun at the idea of extreme fandom. I love them all, but the woman who belongs front and center on my R&B altar is Lisa “Left Eye” Lopes, for four reasons:
She was a safe-sex advocate. The ... Read More
I'd like to start by thanking you. I did appreciate the brisk efficiency with which you mugged me as I approached my front door this past weekend. Granted, I know your window of time was small since there was plenty of foot traffic on my block that evening. It was so bustling that as I walked, I let myself be distracted by the sight of a rabbit and a rat running alongside each other in the alley near my house. I remember wondering, “Are they ... Janet Jackson turned 46 on Wednesday, and this mix by DJ Brainchild showcases some of the brightest gems in her catalogue. Highly recommended! It may or may not make you do a weird shoulder-jerking dance while you’re sitting on the train by yourself! Thanks to Gawker for the link.
It makes me sad to think that some people’s main association with Janet is the Nipplegate incident at the Super Bowl back in 2004. I can’t think of a stronger ... Read More

I’m no stranger to smut. Like many girls, my earliest sex-ed experience was thumbing through my mom’s Jude Deveraux novels, trying to decipher all the euphemisms in the sex scenes. I’m not personally one who, ahem, needs a lot of back story when it comes to this sort of thing — I prefer the short-form stuff (like BUST’s One Handed Reads!). But I’ve always respected the genre. I’ve always assumed that erotica is like poetry or horror movies ... Read More

The cross stitches found at DefiantDamsel's Etsy shop are a hilarious collection of pop culture gems. There's nothing like embroidery to lend a quaint charm to a filthy "Heathers" quote. You can get the pattern and stitch it yourself, or if you're craft-challenged like me (clumsy sausage-finger hands and no attention span) you can buy the finished product in a frame. I think Joel McHale would look great in my den.

Like many people, I am beside myself over The Hunger Games movie. When I first saw the trailer I felt the sort of excitement that Harry Potter fans have known for years. Do you think they’ll build a Panem Park in Orlando right next to the The Wizarding World? I hope they make it super realistic, with a dome where you have to fight for weapons and dodge swarms of hybrid killer bees. I should start teaching myself to wield a trident just to be ready.
