At last night’s American Music Awards, the one and only Rihanna was the first recipient of the “AMA Icon Award.” The AMA Icon Award is given to an artist “whose body of work has made a profound influence over pop music on a global level,” American Music Awards producer Larry Klein explained to The Source. If you check out Rihanna's stats, this shouldn't come as a surprise: she has currently sold 50 million albums and 180 million digital tracks worldwide.
To accept the award, Rihanna performed a beautiful rendition of everyone's jam, “Diamonds”, complete with a full orchestra. Her mother, Monica Fenty, then presented her with the award for her achievements. In one of the evening’s most touching moments, the elder Fenty held her daughter’s hand while proclaiming “the journey of your career has not always been an easy one, but tonight I applaud and honor you for being so strong.”
Rihanna was all smiles standing next to her mom on stage. "I can't believe that at 25 years-old I'm holding an Icon award. If you know me, then you know that I love you. I am grateful. I'm only as good as my team, so I love you so much," she humbly closed.
