It started with a comment commending President Obama on decreased national gas prices and ended with yet another vicious assault on women. And as a native New Yorker, I’m ashamed to say that all the hoopla is happening right here in my home state.

Jay Townsend, the official spokesman for Republican Representative Nan Hayworth and moderator of the page titled "How to Run for Public Office", responded to a comment on NY19 U.S. House of Representatives Civil Discussion Center’s page by writing:

"Listen to Tom. What a little bee he has in his bonnet. Buzz Buzz. My question today...when is Tommy boy going to weigh in on all the Lilly Ledbetter hypocrites who claim to be fighting the War on Women? Let’s hurl some acid at those female democratic Senators who won’t abide the mandates they want to impose on the private sector."

Oh, I can just see the irony dripping across the screen! The word vomit is enough to make anyone violently ill. At the very least, we can take pleasure in the fact that as of right now, Townsend inadvertently is one of the best cases for the existence of the War on Women.

Because nothing screams hatred for the female sex louder than calling for the brutal disfiguration of our bodies. In fact, it’s something that happens all too frequently to oppressed women in Pakistan.

Around the time this story made its web debut, the Global Post published a piece detailing this severe form of violence against Pakistani women, pointing out that these attacks can burn “the skin off to the point of melting bone.” Abusive husbands are especially known to throw acid in the faces of their wives who have "dishonored" them in some way. The Post adds that these horrific attacks were only declared illegal in Pakistan as recently as 2010, and continue to occur largely without repercussions in rural locales.

Along with countless others, Fakhra Younus' painful story is branded into my memory, a woman driven to suicide this past March by her mutilated body and a public that scorned her. Or the tale of Zaib, a ten-year-old girl who can no longer eat or see because of an acid attack carried out against her family last year. She, like Younus, has thoughts of ending her life, according to the Post.

As a decent human being, I am infuriated, though I know that there will always be men who hate women. Jay Townsend is one of those men. But Hayworth, why in the world hasn’t this fool been fired yet?
