Sylvan Esso’s song “Play It Right” speaks of two sounds and two souls coming together. This, in a sense, is how Amelia Meath and Nick Sanborn of Sylvan Esso came to be a band. After sharing the bill in a small club, Meath asked Sanborn to remix the song she had written and the rest is history. The pair met up in Durham, North Carolina to start work on their self-titled debut album, a swirl of electro-pop beats and Meath’s cool and soothing melodies. “Hey Mami” is a catchy mix of chanting melodies and handclaps that tells an infectious tale of catcalling from a man’s perspective. “Wolf” is a smooth and seductive track made sweeter by Meath’s low-whispering howl. “Coffee” is a song that cleverly juxtaposes the warmth and cold of your morning drink to the ups-and-downs of life and love. Sylvan Esso is an album that perfectly layers Meath and Sanborn’s talents to showcase their effortless collaboration.
