Nicki Minaj’s brand new single, “Pills N Potions,” dropped recently, and it appears that the hip-hop goddess is doing better than ever. The song's off her upcoming album, The Pink Print, and signals what might be a rather drastic transformation for an artist who has been known to rock more hair colors than you'd find in a box of Crayola crayons. She's definitely heading in a different direction, musically and personal-style-wise, than what we've seen from her before–and I, for one, am thrilled.

She credits her recent metamorphosis, namely her toned-down and more natural look, to the album's message and overall personal vibe. Minaj was recently interviewed on hip-hop radio show The Breakfast Club, and had this to say:

"The album is more personal, so the look being stripped down goes really well with the third album. I always planned to do it at this time. It didn’t just come about now; I just always thought in my head that [with] my third album I would want to go back to my real hair."

Minaj has steadily grown into a more established presence in the rap industry since her 2010 debut album Pink Friday peaked at number one on the Billboard charts. Her prior success and rising notoriety in music, media, and fashion have afforded her an opportunity to create an album that's more honest and stripped-down than her previous releases. And since hip-hop's roots lie in the elements of traditional storytelling, her more personal source of inspiration might be exactly what she needs to get to the next level.

I’m excited to hear the rest of her album, and I’m intrigued by this new “authentic self” that she's offering up. Check out the song for yourself and let us know what you think in the comments.
