You heard right, because that's what the 68-year-old actor is blaming it on. In a recent interview with The Guardian, Douglas discussed why he believes he developed throat cancer. When asked if his smoking and drinking habits caused the disease, Douglas replied that neither habit was the culprit. The real problem? Taking a trip downtown with your lady friend!
"No, he says. No. Because, without wanting to get too specific, this particular cancer is caused by HPV [human papillomavirus], which actually comes about from cunnilingus... I mean, I did worry if the stress caused by my son's incarceration didn't help trigger it. But yeah, it's a sexually transmitted disease that causes cancer."
As if guys needed another excuse not to go down on women. I'll give credit where credit is due. According to a study published in the May 10 issue of The New England Journal of Medicine, "Having multiple oral sex partners topped the list of practices associated with an increased risk of developing oropharyngeal cancer." BUT I don't think it's fair to say it "comes about from cunnilingus." There are other ways to contract HPV-16 (which is linked to oral cancer, among others), like open mouthed kissing for example. Your chances of contracting HPV obviously increase when your number of sexual partners increase. Just talk to your sex buddy beforehand and always use protection. (Duh.)
Douglas doesn't seem to have regrets about his sex practices though. His recommendation for fellow throat cancer survivors? "If you have it, cunnilingus is also the best cure for it." Although experts aren't backing up this claim, I say more power to him!
