Remember when M.I.A. tossed up her middle finger during her appearance at the 2012 SuperBowl? Yeah, it’s cool—I really don’t remember it either. Even the FCC never gave her any heat about it, and what do you know? The world is still fully functional and humans haven’t quite yet resorted to cannibalism.

As it turns out, not everyone is satisfied with the current state of affairs. It has recently come to light that the NFL began taking action against M.I.A. about a month after the incident occurred. Continuously, she’s been asked to pay a fine of $1.5 million and to issue a public apology.

The gesture apparently “breach[ed] her performance contract and tarnish[ed]” the “goodwill and reputation” of the NFL. Come on...Seriously? This feels like we're at a high school reunion and the now-bald jocks are still trying to pick on the artsy kids-turned highly-successful, cool graphic designers...

M.I.A.’s lawyer, Howard King, responded with the world’s most perfect eyeroll:

“Of course, the NFL's claimed reputation for wholesomeness is hilarious in light of the weekly felonies committed by its stars, the bounties placed by coaches on opposing players, the homophobic and racist comments uttered by its players, the complete disregard for the health of players...”

So what’s next for M.I.A.? King ensures she is “planning an all-out assault on the NFL's claims of being a brand devoted to high morals.”

The only logical explanation I can fathom is that her two-second middle finger must have turned some coach’s kid into a Child of the Corn. Clearly no one at the NFL had any idea who she is or they probably wouldn’t have wasted their time trying to get an "I'm sorry" out of her. Judging by the fact that she’s still fighting the demands more than a year later, they certainly know who she is now.
