Jim Henson’s film Labyrinth has been my favorite movie since I was seven. For 14 years I’ve been an adamant fan of the dark children’s movie staring a young Jennifer Connelly and a not-quite-so-young David Bowie. I was entranced by the playful but undeniably sinister nature of the film and still to this day watch it at least once a week.   However, I also think that exposing me to this movie at a young and primitive age simultaneously deeply fucked up my relationships with men and also made me the passionate feminist I am today. There are two great beauties in this world: flowers and beards. Why had no one thought to combine the two until now? Flowers are a gift from nature, a beauty unmatched until…men decided to grow out their face hair. Am I right ladies? A good beard can churn up my insides faster than ripped abs or perfect man style. The combination of the romantic and stereotypically “feminine” nature of flowers with the uber masculine connotation of facial hair creates a sweet and charming juxtaposition as men worldwide have started adorning their beards with flowers. I love dogs. I say this sentence almost once a day in order to explain to someone why I need to pet a stranger’s dog on the street. I am especially prone to cuddle up old dogs with grey faces and sweet demeanors. My family has two old and gray pugs at home so I love giving old dogs a good squeeze on the street. Now you know why I’m tearing up at my desk in the BUST HQ looking at these pictures of old dogs that are also national heroes. Yeah, okay, that’s a lie. I’m full on crying at my desk and trying not to get tears on my laptop. Read More
Ladies and gentlemen alike, this is a call to arms - and by arms, we mean strap-ons. Good Vibrations, the infamous San Francisco based retailer that pride themselves on providing both accurate information on sexuality and adult toys, is encouraging you to strap one on and snap a pic for International Strap-On Week.  International Strap-On Week takes place June 16th- June 22nd and if you’re hanging out in the San Francisco area you should stop in to Good Vibrations for free classes, in store and online promotions, and of course the entertaining #straponselfie social media contest. The two circles featuring the cult classic movie The Room, and James Franco’s baby brother Dave overlap and create a venn diagram with a middle space entitled “Things I Love.” This is why I was so excited to hear that the actor my friends and I affectionately refer to as “baby Franco” will be playing Greg Sestero in the (stay with me now) movie version of Sestero’s book about his experience filming the movie The Room, titled The Disaster Artist: My Life Inside the Room. Let me preface this lighthearted article about a funny website by saying we understand that not all straight white boys text like this. We get it. What almost every girl can bond over is the experience of trying to have a regular conversation with a guy when oh no- they try to make it sexual way too fast. Since when does telling a guy you just ate some celery mean I want a picture of your penis? Every girl knows the tricks. “Want to play 20 questions?” means “I’m going to ask you uncomfortable questions about your body and you have to answer. Read More
I have some choice words for Kevin D. Williamson, roving correspondent of the National Review. Kevin wrote an article for the online publication, which was reprinted in the Chicago Sun-Times, stating that actress and activist Laverne Cox is not a woman. Yeah, I know, let that sink in for a minute. This white male is trying to tell anyone who will listen that the revolutionary transgender activist is in fact not the gender she identifies with simply because she was born with male genitals. I am literally clutching my chest with dismay right now. Read More
I don’t know about you, but summer's the time when I kick up my heels and bust out my Mod Podge. The warm weather makes me not only want to clean and redecorate, but do fun crafts in order to personalize my space. Lately I’ve been on a home décor craft kick, so I thought I’d share this weekend’s DIY with all my BUSTies--it's my new pin-up coffee table! My two roommates know me as a serial sidewalk furniture hoarder (I prefer furniture “rescuer”), so when I dragged home this scratched-up old side table with wobbly legs, no one was surprised.   Sophia Amorusa has lived many lives and I’m jealous of all of them. From her days as a freegan dumpster diving hitchhiker to where she is now, the CEO and creative director of the uber popular online boutique Nastygal.com, Amorusa has been kicking ass and taking names. My parents own their own business together so I’ve been surrounded by books about how to run a business my whole life. Sophia Amorusa’s book #GIRLBOSS is completely different from those guides written by middle-aged men, thank god. Read More
For the long Memorial Day weekend, I took a break from my hectic Brooklyn lifestyle to go home and visit my family in the suburbs upstate. I expected five days of lounging outside, with two pugs draped over me and lots of barbeque, but what I got was an intervention from my family. No, I’m not addicted to drugs or alcohol or any dangerous vice; I’ve just gotten fat. I need to provide you with a smidge of background info for this story. I’ve always been obscenely tall, currently towering over most of my friends at 5' 10". Read More
