Clear your freezer: Girl Scout cookie season is nearly upon us. And you’ll need to strengthen your resolve this year, because Scouts aren’t just adorably shilling their addictive treats on a sidewalk near you: they’re also using social media to network with potential customers. Girl Scouts are now using texts, emails, Facebook, and even mobile credit card readers to widen their customer base—and their strategy is working! Despite the economic downturn, cookie sales have continued to rise at a brisk pace. Read More
You thought your voting experience was painful? Check it: Galicia Malone, a 21-year-old from Dolton, Illinois, went into labor and somehow managed to vote before heading to the hospital. Her water had already broken by the time she reached her local polling station, according to Cook County Clerk David Orr.   “I wanted this to be a stepping-stone for my daughter,” Galicia, a first-time voter, said. Galicia, we salute you! That kind of dedication is what makes democracy go ‘round.   Photo via nbcchicago. Read More
It's Election Day! And everyone is really, really tense. I'm no exception: just the other day, an acquaintance mentioned that she really doesn't care who wins, and instead of engaging said person in thoughtful dialogue, I yelled ROE VERSUS WADE FOR THE LOVE OF GOD and burst into tears. So ANYWAY! Supreme Crafty Lady Callie discovered this gem yesterday and it had us all ROFLcoptering around the office. I don't know how to explain it, and to be honest, I don't even care. Just let it wash over you. Inhale. Exhale. Ladies and gentlemen, I present to you: Presidents with Boob Faces. Read More
It’s been a week since Hurricane Sandy started making her way up the Northeast, and despite the valiant efforts of police, firefighters, and good old-fashioned volunteers, there is an unbelievable amount of clean-up and reconstruction that needs to be done. This short film by fashion photographer and director Poppy de Villeneuve gives a sobering view of conditions in the Rockaways, a beach community in Queens (and one of my favorite places in New York): There are so many neighborhoods that need our help, and sadly, so many impediments to getting there. We’re happy to report that Pakistani teen activist Malala Yousafzai is not expected to have significant brain damage following an assassination attempt by the Taliban. Malala has been undergoing treatment at Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham, England for the last two weeks.   Well, hello, lovelies! We hope you've emerged from Hurricane Sandy all safe and sound. Between the NYC subway shutdown and tons of power loss in New York and beyond, it’s gonna be a little more difficult to get posts up today on the BUST Blog—so please bear with us. I can’t venture far out of my neighborhood due to the (supa scary) subway situation, so I’m just trying to enjoy the heck out of this random staycation. Read More

Here’s a pop of psychedelic joy to brighten up your gloomy Tuesday!     Brooklyn-based singer-songwriter Sami Akbari, who performs as sami.the.great, has just released a video for her throwback single “Hear Me Now”. Sami’s twee-yet-powerful voice and charmingly introspective songwriting usually bring Ingrid Michaelson to mind, but she puts on her Nancy Sinatra hat (or, more appropriately, flip wig) for this upbeat track. The video matches the deliriously fuzzy girl-group vibe with a heaping helping of lo-fi animation. Read More

Movie Review: The Girl

BY Maggie Carr in TV

“Blondes make the best victims,” Alfred Hitchcock once said. “They’re like virgin snow that shows up the bloody footprints.” So begins The Girl, HBO’s deeply (and rightly) gnarly exploration of the fraught relationship between Hitchcock and arguably the most legendary of his blonde ingénues, Tippi Hedren (Sienna Miller).
