Book Love: A Homemade Life

BY Lisa in Eat Me

I think I've mentioned my epic love of food before. I love eating, but I also love cooking. In fact I love just looking at food, or talking about it, and especially reading about it. One of my favorite food bloggers, Molly Wizenberg of Orangette, has a new book out called A Homemade Life: Stories and Recipes From My Kitchen Table. Read on for details... I'm only halfway through it but I can tell you it is awesome. Read More

Away We Go trailer

BY Lisa in General

There are so many awesome things about this movie I don't even know where to start. But here goes. The screenplay is by amazing author Vendela Vida and her equally rad hubby Dave Eggers. Maya Rudolph as a leading lady! John Krasinski. With a beard. Wearing nerdy glasses. Hot. Allison Janney, Catherine O'Hara, and Maggie Gyllenhaal top the supporting cast. And it's directed by Sam Mendes, but looks like a sweet, poignant movie with plenty of laughs (unlike the depressing, suckerpunch-to-the-heart films he usually gives us). Opens June 5. Read More
Three of my favorite artists (Caroline, Saelee, and Seonna) have joined forces for a show, I Know What You're Thinking, that opens next week in New York. Knowing the work these ladies do, I'm pretty sure it's gonna be a triple threat of awesomeness. See more of their work after the jump. Read More

Chairlift on tour!

BY Lisa in Music

Yeah, you've heard their ridiculously catchy tune 'Bruises' on that iPod commercial but seriously, this Brooklyn-based trio is so much more than that. I caught their show at the Williamsburg Music Hall awhile back when they opened for Yeasayer (LOVE!) and it says a lot when the first band draws as big a crowd as the headliner. Go catch them on their new tour that kicks off this week (click here for dates), especially to see keyboardist/vocalist Caroline Polachek in action. Read More

Confession:

BY Lisa in TV

I watch The Bachelor. And not just off-handedly while flipping channels, or once in awhile if I happen to be home. On Mondays I make a point to have dinner made by 8 so I can give each episode (and the adult beverages my friend Amber always brings over) my full attention. This garners me endless teasing from my boyfriend and I've only recently come to terms with admitting my slight obsession to friends. But I can't help it, I'm hooked. The show is simultaneously appalling and mesmerizing. Read More

Beth Ditto: Designer!!

BY Lisa in General

Word on the street (and by street I mean Fashionista) is that Beth Ditto's line for the U.K. store Evans is coming out sooner than expected, maybe even March! I can't WAIT to see it. If the clothes she's created are anything like the ones she rocks, it will be a stellar collection. I mean just look at these two outfits! Totally different, totally awesome. Read More

Mmmmmmm Ward.

BY Lisa in General

I've always been a fan of this Portland, OR, based crooner's scratchy voice and rockin' piano/guitar skills, so getting to see him last night at the Apollo (not nearly as big as it looks on TV! Who knew?) was nothing short of awesome. He played a few slow jams by himself, opening with the title track, 'Hold Time,' off his brand new album, then rocked out with his band and even brought a few members of Brooklyn Americana crew Oakley Hall out on stage (loved those ladies' harmonies!). Half-Birthday Knits

BY Lisa in General

We thought the embroidered grocery bag craft in our Feb/Mar issue (above left) was totally genius. Well it just so happens that Jennifer Reichert, the bag's designer, has many more tricks up her sleeve. My favorites are the custom knit portrait totes she makes (like the one above). Amazing! And if you love that grocery bag but just can't find the time to make it, you can get one right from the creator herself, just check out her Web site, Half-Birthday Knits, for all the crafty goodness. BUST's Movie Hall of Fame

BY Lisa in General

For all the movies I've seen, there's a shit ton that I haven't. When Debbie found out the other day that I've never watched All About Eve, she nearly excommunicated me from the office until I could say that I had. Well, since we're on deadline she let me stick around but it got us talking about what films belong in BUST's Movie Hall of Fame. Read More

Gorgeous smut alert!

BY Lisa in Sex

The always-titillating Susie Bright has a new anthology out called X:The Erotic Treasury. Not only is it awesome on the inside, filled with the best the world of erotica has to offer, but it's also pretty on the outside, with a lush cover and a classy slipcase designed by one of my fave artists, Hannah Stouffer. New Yorkers are lucky to get some face time with Susie this month, she's got some events and readings coming up, click through for the info.   But HERE'S my question. Read More
