Oklahoma is well on its way to becoming the most restrictive state for women seeking abortions. The two most recent bills are bad enough–one forces a woman to have an ultrasound and then listen to a detailed description of the fetus' limbs and organs, while the other prevents a woman for suing a doctor who fails to mention if the fetus is disabled. I don't even get how these two bills can actually work together, but apparently that doesn't matter in ... Read More
Here's the pitch -- a great chef who loves music creates "tour food" for his favorite indie bands. What doesn't this new IFC show have going for it? You can be the judge tonight, when Chef Sam Mason brings his culinary talents and visual splendor to the small screen's premiere episode* of "Dinner with the Band," airing at 10:30 EST. OK, I'm calling it "tour food" because I don't see pheasant actually hitting an on-the-go menu anytime soon, but who cares? It's such ... Read More
In a move that must be doing wonders for sales, Lane Bryant's new lingerie ads have been banned from the airwaves by ABC television. Reps for the company claim that network execs deemed the commercials too sexy to run, which is kind of unbelievable since they've had no qualms showing Victoria's Secret ads in the past. The snowball does get rolling, however, as we learn that Fox News (which had no problem showing the below Victoria's Secret spot) also denied Lane ... Read More
"Green Porno," the uber weird and wonderful series by Isabella Rossellini, now has a follow-up in "Seduce Me." Like its predecessor, "Seduce Me" demonstrates the bizarre mating rituals of animals--including bedbugs (ew!), ducks, salmon, and snakes--with Rossellini costumed up and acting out each of the various roles. It's crazy entertaining. How something this whimsical made it in this economy beats me. There's no upsell to this thing, except maybe a line of ... Read More
"Your son is a woman!" cried a strange voice at me from my friend's answering machine. "Oh that's from Paris is Burning," he explained later. "You never saw that?" The rising inflection in his voice telling me I should. A gay black man who grew up in the deep South, Willy was celebrating the 20th anniversary of the film that taught him he could make his own community. About time I saw this thing. The film documents the houses that poor gay men flocked to as far ... Read More
PSST! The mommy 'n me paradigm is under attack. Finally. Maybe the most interesting thing about Elizabeth Badinter's new book Le Conflit, La Femme et La Mère (The Conflict, The Woman and The Mother) is the ruckus it's causing. In stating the obvious—that women have imposed a new  tyranny on themselves through perfectionist childraising—she's drawn wide-ranging contempt. Everyone from conservative Christians to ecologists and ... Read More
If you've never seen this clip before, you need to watch it now. This Fergie Oliver guy makes any Bob Packwood or Bob Barker look like a kitten. Crack all the Catholic priest jokes you want (except that they tend toward little boys), but I'm rooting for the little girls. Check these chicks OUT. They aren't having any of it. Especially (and by this time I hope you've clicked on the clip and disinfected yourself) the one who isn't willing to kiss him even if ... Read More

And that time the condom broke. Or I was careless. Or maybe it was something more sinister. Whatever happened last night, help is only as far away as the nearest Internet connection. At this nifty web site, you can simply plug in your ZIP code, and out shoots a list of options  where you can pick up emergency contraception. I even tested it by plugging in obscure ZIP codes from my past, and not-2-late.com dutifully replied with a list of nearby ... Read More
It may not be approved by Mattel, but the new Rev. Barbie comes to you from the House of God. That's right, an Episcopal priest from Kent, Ohio (Rev. Julie Blake Fisher) has designed the latest professional incarnation for Barbie. The Episcopal Church has been ordaining women since 1976, though not without controversy. Women are kept out of leadership position in many evangelical and Pentecostal churches. And of course the Catholic Church does not ordain women at ... Read More
